Abstract

The assurance of orgasm during vaginal intercourse is lower for women than for men, with high variability among women. It is unclear why some women orgasm easily even with low levels of stimulation, whereas other women do not experi- ence an orgasm despite appropriate stimulation. Against the backdrop of controversial research findings, the goal of this study was to examine the relationship between dealing with emotions and female orgasm consistency. In addition, the study collected the respondents’ subjective beliefs about pre- dictors influencing orgasm consistency. Additional objectives were to examine the intercorrelations of orgasm consistency with various sexual activities and to investigate the relationship between sexual behavior and orgasm consistency. A quantita- tive questionnaire was used in a convenience sample of 1,155 female students from five universities. All calculated rank correlation coefficients on the association between dealing with emotionsemotional traits (acceptance of feelings; self-control; overwhelming emotions; openness; body image) and female orgasm consistency due to different sexual activities (five variables) were close to zero. Orgasm consistency due to masturbation had little to do with vaginal intercourse orgasm consistency. Women who more frequently disclosed their own sexual desires, more frequently initiated sex, and who were more satisfied with their sex lives report- ed higher orgasm consistency during vaginal intercourse. Implications for sex counseling, sex therapy, and sex educa- tion are discussed.
