Abstract

Communication during sexual encounters can be divided into individualistic and mutualistic – meaning reciprocal – erotic talk. The former tends to focus on one’s own, more subjective experience, while the latter emphasizes bonding and intimacy and is thought to be associated with sexual health. In an online survey, data were collected from 377 people using a sex talk questionnaire (Jonason et al., 2016) and a short questionnaire on sexual problems (Hartmann, 2000). The analysis revealed positive correlations between feelings of pleasure, arousal, orgasmic ability and sexual satisfaction in both forms of erotic talk, albeit to varying degrees. Of particular note were the correlations between women’s feelings of pleasure and men’s erectile function and the respective forms of communication. However, no correlation was found with the occurrence of pain. The results are particularly relevant for long-term relationships, as communication focused on bonding and intimacy (mutualistic talk) could improve sexual health, for example in cases of erectile dysfunction or low libido.
